The industry has trained itself to start with&nbsp;<strong>T4: Tokenize<\/strong>\u2014and only later, sometimes never, ask if there is anything underneath worth representing in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Analyses in recent years consistently show that most crypto tokens and blockchain projects fail, often within the first year. Common patterns include tokens launched without real utility or use case, no clear problem being solved, weak or non\u2011existent trust foundations, and speculative communities that disappear once the hype fades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words: we keep&nbsp;<strong>tokenizing nothing<\/strong>\u2014and then we are surprised when nothing of value remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After years working around blockchain, digital identity, and trust infrastructure, I learned to reverse the order. Before I touch a token model, I run every project through a simple lens I call the&nbsp;<strong>4T Method<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p data-wp-context---core-fit-text=\"core\/fit-text::{&quot;fontSize&quot;:&quot;&quot;}\" data-wp-init---core-fit-text=\"core\/fit-text::callbacks.init\" data-wp-interactive data-wp-style--font-size=\"core\/fit-text::context.fontSize\" class=\"has-fit-text wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Trust \u2192 Trace \u2192 Track \u2192 Tokenize.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tokenization, in this view, is not the starting point. It is the last T\u2014the&nbsp;<strong>visible surface of an underlying trust commodity<\/strong>&nbsp;that has already been carefully designed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blockchain, in this sense, is not a magic tool for price; it is a&nbsp;<strong>truth engine<\/strong>: a way to embed verifiable structure into systems that previously relied only on institutional promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tokenization-without-trust-why-the-t4first-model-k\">Tokenization without trust: why the \u201cT4\u2011first\u201d model keeps failing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before going into the 4T method, it is worth asking a basic question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are we actually tokenizing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many projects behave as if the token&nbsp;<em>is<\/em>&nbsp;the asset. But a growing body of practitioners and legal analysts keep repeating the same warning: a token is not an asset; it is a pointer. The real asset is the enforceable right underneath\u2014the claim, title, contract, or registry entry that survives stress.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/jesaldarriaga_token-asset-most-tokenization-projects-activity-7409251363081068544-PX_U\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When that foundation is weak or undefined, tokenization does not create value; it simply accelerates confusion. Multiple analyses of failed crypto projects show the same pattern: tokens created \u201cjust because\u201d with no clear utility in a real system, token economics designed for speculation rather than representing rights or measurable contributions, and no trustworthy infrastructure for governance, auditing, or accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result is what I call the&nbsp;<strong>empty\u2011token problem<\/strong>. If you skip Trust, Trace, and Track, the token becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a floating symbol with no reliable mapping to reality<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>something that cannot serve as a\u00a0<strong>foundation of trust<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a poor candidate for long\u2011term institutional adoption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why I never start with token design. I start with&nbsp;<strong>Trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"t1--trust-define-the-commodity-before-you-digitize\">T1 \u2013 Trust: define the commodity before you digitize it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blockchain is often described as \u201ctrustless\u201d technology, but that word is misleading. It does not remove trust; it relocates it\u2014from institutions to protocols, from promises to infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In any serious project, I begin by asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Who needs to trust whom? Citizens, regulators, banks, creators, platforms, validators?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What are they afraid might go wrong? Fraud, double\u2011spend, censorship, invisibility, misuse of data?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which parts of that risk can be addressed by cryptography and consensus, and which parts remain social, legal, or political?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where I define what I call the&nbsp;<strong>trust commodity<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a financial system, that might be: \u201cclaims to cash flows that remain valid under stress\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a digital identity system: \u201cbindings between person, credential, and action that cannot be silently altered\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In an IP financing system: \u201crights and revenue participation that can be enforced, not just promised\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until this trust commodity is clearly articulated, \u201ctokenization\u201d is essentially painting a speculative price on top of undefined promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blockchain can help us build a&nbsp;<strong>truth engine<\/strong>\u2014a shared, tamper\u2011resistant ledger where certain facts become very hard to dispute. But if we do not know which truths matter, the engine simply spins without purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"t2--trace-make-the-critical-relationships-auditabl\">T2 \u2013 Trace: make the critical relationships auditable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once trust is defined, the next question is:&nbsp;<strong>what must be traceable?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trace is about&nbsp;<strong>auditability<\/strong>\u2014the ability to reconstruct what happened, who did what, when, and under which rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For each project, I ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which events must be visible end\u2011to\u2011end?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the \u201corigin story\u201d we need to preserve\u2014of assets, identities, documents, or decisions?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who needs to be able to verify this trace: regulators, auditors, counterparties, the public?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this could mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the provenance trail of a creative work or product (Digital Product Passport)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the lifecycle of a credential in a decentralized identity system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the chain of approvals in a lending or compliance process<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we cannot agree on what should be&nbsp;<strong>provably traceable<\/strong>, any token we create later will float without context. We will have \u201cownership tokens\u201d with no reliable story of where they came from, or \u201cimpact tokens\u201d with no verifiable link to underlying behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trust commodity without Trace is&nbsp;<strong>unverifiable belief<\/strong>.<br>A blockchain without Trace is&nbsp;<strong>just a slow database<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"t3--track-design-the-feedback-loops-before-the-mar\">T3 \u2013 Track: design the feedback loops before the markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trace is about reconstructing the past;&nbsp;<strong>Track<\/strong>&nbsp;is about seeing the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here the questions change:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What signals must we continuously watch to ensure the system stays within acceptable bounds?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which patterns indicate abuse, concentration of power, manipulation, or systemic risk?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Who has the mandate to act when those patterns emerge, and how?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In a federated blockchain for government, we may need to track validator behavior, participation, and slashing conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a tokenized IP financing platform, we may need to track revenue flows, defaults, and liquidity concentration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In a sustainability system, we may need to track emissions data, verification events, and conflicts of interest in oracles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without Track, governance becomes purely reactive\u2014and usually political. Dashboards are not an afterthought; they are part of the&nbsp;<strong>design of trust<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If Trust defines&nbsp;<em>what matters<\/em>, and Trace defines&nbsp;<em>what must be provable<\/em>, then Track defines&nbsp;<em>how the system learns about itself<\/em>. Only when these three layers are in place do I allow myself to ask the question everyone else starts with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"t4--tokenize-the-visible-surface-of-a-trust-engine\">T4 \u2013 Tokenize: the visible surface of a trust engine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, finally, we can talk about tokens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 4T Method, tokenization is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The act of representing a&nbsp;<strong>well\u2011defined trust commodity<\/strong>\u2014already designed for Trace and Track\u2014as a programmable object that can move, be held, and be composed inside and across systems.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the difference from the empty\u2011token mindset:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Instead of asking \u201cWhat token can we launch?\u201d, we ask \u201cWhat trust commodity have we already designed well enough that representing it as a token adds value?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of \u201cHow do we pump this?\u201d, we ask \u201cHow does this token reinforce the trust and truth structure of the system?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good tokenization, in this sense, is almost boring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>an identity credential token that encodes verifiable attributes, bound to a DID and revocation logic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an IP revenue\u2011share token that maps to real contracts and audited payment streams<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a governance token whose voting power explicitly aligns with responsibility and exposure, not just speculation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad tokenization, by contrast, is exciting in the wrong way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>high\u2011APY promises with no real underlying utility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>governance rights without clarity on what is governed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201casset\u2011backed\u201d tokens where the underlying asset is legally unreachable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The industry has spent years optimizing T4 first: launchpad funnels, AMM incentives, liquidity mining, viral marketing. The result, as recent analyses show, is that&nbsp;<strong>millions of tokens are now inactive, and more than half of cryptocurrency projects are effectively dead or abandoned<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the idea of tokenization is wrong\u2014but because we tried to tokenize before we had anything trustworthy to represent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"blockchain-as-truth-engine-not-hype-engine\">Blockchain as truth engine, not hype engine<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we accept blockchain as a&nbsp;<strong>truth machine<\/strong>&nbsp;or trust machine\u2014a shared ledger that embeds guarantees about integrity, immutability, and consensus\u2014then we must also accept the responsibility that comes with that metaphor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A truth engine that runs on empty symbols will not magically produce truth. It will produce&nbsp;<strong>faster, more transparent confusion<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 4T Method is my way of resisting that temptation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Trust<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 What is the trust commodity we care about?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Trace<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 How do we make its lifecycle provable?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Track<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 How do we monitor it in motion?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Tokenize<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 How do we represent it, once it is ready, as a programmable object?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sequence is not academic. It is a discipline I use on whiteboards, in workshops, in funding discussions, and in architecture sessions with teams and institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can of course build tokens without it. Many have\u2014and many will continue to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if we want blockchain to move from speculation to&nbsp;<strong>infrastructure<\/strong>, from promises to&nbsp;<strong>practice<\/strong>, then we need fewer empty tokens and more carefully designed trust commodities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The order matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Start with&nbsp;<strong>Trust<\/strong>.<br>Then&nbsp;<strong>Trace<\/strong>.<br>Then&nbsp;<strong>Track<\/strong>.<br>Only then, if it still makes sense\u2014<strong>Tokenize<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Most blockchain projects still begin with the same question:\u201cWhat should our token be?\u201d Which chain, what ticker, how many decimals, what kind of \u201cutility\u201d, which listing, which APY.
